The
Center is a non-profit organization that showcases and celebrates the wonders,
lifestyles, people, history,
and cultures of the South.
Mission Statement
To preserve, defend and promote the
music, culture, arts, and rhythms of the South.
The goal is to develop
programs in the print and broadcast
media, cyberspace, public performance venues,
tourism and
education that celebrate the
regions cultural heritage.
Facilities
Visitors can enjoy a variety
of activities and services, including:
- Folklore Store
that showcases the best regional music, books, and art works. Coffee
and Beer
Bar
featuring espressos, cappuccinos, milk shakes, southern and ethnic
delicacies such as Ella Kizzies
Homemade Peach Cobbler, greens and hot water cornbread and lots more.
- On Line Catalog
on Centers web site for those who cant visit with
us in person.
- Performance Hall
where jazz, blues, rockabilly, soul, roots and gospel performances are
held. Beers,
coffees served. (Check Calendar
for schedule of performances)
- Gallery and VIP Lounge
featuring Folk Art and Photography exhibits
- Media area
for screening videos about music, folk arts and the region.
- Multimedia Archives
consisting of video and audio recordings of music and narratives,
contemporary and historical photographs, film, and slides, selected
artifacts and folk art.
- Cool Spaces
for parties, programs, meetings, and special events.
Programs/Events
The
Center uses a range of methods to creatively present folk
culture
to
audiences of all
ages, including:
- Folklore Factory will
serve as an incubator facility to provide jobs and create new
businesses for
traditional artists, musicians, performers, cooks and craftspeople.
- Cultural Excursions,
musical programs, and educational seminars
available by appointment
for school, tour, and community groups. Can include a breakfast, lunch
or dinner. Performers,
musicians, talkers, craftspeople are available for your program. Book
early.
- Touring music and art
programs that may be booked
locally, regionally, and nationally
- Performances
by blues, jazz, soul, gospel, rockabilly, country, folk and bluegrass
musicians,
dancers, poets, cooks and more. In the Folklore Hall and Folklore
Store. Check Calendar.
- Television Program
shown 4 times a week on The Library Channel presenting folk artists.
Staff & Board
Staff of seasoned
professionals augmented by community volunteers and
interns from regional and national
colleges and
universities. Thirty-person board of directors oversees
the Center operations. Board

Catering
The
Center offers full service catering. From
special music andsouthern food events to parties,
receptions and special occasions for
groups of
all sizes (from 10 to 200) Center hosts catering in three
locations.
