Taylor Made TOUCH: Making Records

Please click the TOUCH icon on the right to view the selected artifacts.

In the 1940s when recording equipment became portable, Rev. Taylor had another way to document the world around him.  Beyond the simple image, he captured the sound of his environment both as live events and as studio recordings.  Like his film making and photography, he shared his work with his community and also generated some income from his skills and equipment.

1.  Lacquer Disc and Label
The lacquer disc displayed here is one of 100 discs in the Collection.  They were recorded using technology similar to what radio stations had been using since the 1930s to record programs on 16 inch transcription discs.  Most of the lacquer discs had few dates or notations on the labels.

2.  Bluff City Invoice
The receipt from Bluff City Distributing Company for the purchase of twelve 12" discs shows that in 1946 Taylor was actively making documentary records. We believe that he made copies on the 12" discs and either gave or sold them to the men and women he recorded.

3.  Operating Directions for a Webster Model 60 Record Player
After making his recordings on a Presto Recording Machine he would play his master disc on a Webster Model 60 Record Player.  The Webster's output went directly to the recording unit on which he would cut a 12" lacquer disc copy at 78 rpm.  The Taylor Collection contains the instructions to play the Webster Model 60 Record Player.
