A picture tells a thousand words.  Our artists have a lot to say.  Folk art is not only a piece of art in its own right, it is also a piece of cultural history.  At the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival you can even discuss this with some of the artists in person.

Long before the word "recycling" came into vogue, Memphis/Mid-South craftspeople were taught the value of taking discarded bits of cloth, wood, metal, leather and paint and creating objects that are both useful as well as ornamental.  Whether it's pillows and quilts made from velvet Crown Royal liquor bags or colorful paintings festooned with bottle caps, the artists we feature pride themselves on creating something from what other people would consider "nothing."

Folk Art and Crafts are made by hand, steeped in tradition and personal history.  Many unschooled artists have been discovered by the "elite" art community to acclaim undreamed of by the creators of the art we show here.  The beauty of this art is not only in the craft of the artists, but in the directness of their hearts.
