Blame it on all on Memphis Slim. In 1968, Philippe was a young Frenchman studying for a career as a classical pianist. But after hearing the great piano master, Philippe became a blues hound, scouring local record shops for recordings by all the boogie-woogie greats. In 1980 he knew he had arrived when his long-time idol Memphis Slim asked him to join him on "Dialog in Boogie," an album of piano duets.
Mr. LeJeune combines a powerful left hand with a graceful right to walk that fine line between jazz and rhythm & blues. His repertoire ranges from classic barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano to Duke Ellington and Horace Silver tunes as well as Benny Carter and Milt Jackson. He has entertained at many American music festivals, including the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival in Toledo, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival and the Cincinnati Queen City Festival, which is a rare privilege for a European musician. Philippe LeJeune mixes the traditional and the contemporary blending it all into a highly personal style and repertoire. The Houston Chronicle said it best, "Hearing LeJeune is like going back in a time capsule to the days before rhythm and blues separated from jazz."
