DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION'S CONVERSATIONS SERIES TO TALK ABOUT BLUES MUSIC IN MEMPHIS
Memphis' Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) continues its Conversation Series at its monthly meeting Tuesday, March 22, 2011. The series provides
the community a chance to meet a variety of men and woman who share
their personal histories about their businesses, music, and community
life. These interviews focus on the history of Downtown and Urban
Memphis and incorporate places, businesses, and communities. The event
will be held in the Center for Southern Folklore's Folklore Hall from
6:00 to 8:00 PM. The Center is located at 119 S. Main Street. The March program: Blues is in My Soul Panelists include blues singer, Ms. Nickki, bassist Melvin Lee, harmonica great Blind Mississippi Morris and producer and guitarist Brad Webb..
Each musician has performed in Memphis and on Beale Street and has
taken Memphis Blues on the road across Canada and Europe. The program
will be moderated by Judy Peiser, DNA Board Member and Co-Founder, Center for Southern Folklore. Following the conversations these musicians will perform. "We
are delighted to continue this series," said Ken Hudson, President of
DNA. "As downtowners we take people to hear blues performances on Beale,
at the Center for Southern Folklore and other clubs and venues. This
conversation will let all of us know what it is like to for these
artists to perform blues for Memphians and for tourists. We'll hear how
international audiences react to Memphis Blues throughout Europe where
all four of these musicians have performed in large cities and small
towns from England to Greece." Hudson continues, "This musical
conversation will add to our understanding of what it's like to be a
working musician celebrating Memphis music from Beale to Brussels. There
are so many people who live and work downtown who have moved to Memphis
from other parts of the country. This program will give these newcomers
and native Memphians as chance to know more about the place they now
call home." Admission to the meeting is free for DNA members and $5.00
for guests. Annual individual DNA membership is $25.00. Celebrating its 30th year in 2011 the DNA is the oldest community organization
in Downtown Memphis. DNA welcomes all those who live and work in the
areas from Crump to Wolf River and Danny Thomas to the Mississippi
River. DNA's mission is to promote enjoyment and enhancement of downtown
living and to protect and enhance the quality of life and foster a
spirit of community in the downtown area for residents, businesses and
visitors. For additional information about DNA or the March 22nd event go to Facebook/ Downtown Neighborhood Association.
