Grace Askew Along with her band, the Black
Market Goods, Bluff City-local Grace Askew will be performing at
Memphis's own Center for Southern Folklore Store on December 10, 2011
at 8pm. The Store is located at 123 S. Main Street.
Grace's is a sound combining the blues,
jazz, soft whispers of country, and that unmistakable infusion of Memphis soul.
Raised with the music of Joni Mitchell, Cat Power, and Tom Waits playing
in the background, their influence blends with the smoky timbre of her voice to
create a sound that has enchanted listeners locally and nationally for years.
Recently, she released her third LP 'Until They Lay Me Down to Rest,'
showcasing her full-bodied sound and stirring lyrics, where her musings on the beauties and idiosyncrasies of life speak directly to the mind and heart.
No stranger to the local music
scene, Grace and the Black Market Goods have been performing steadily in
Memphis for quite some time and have taken their act to other musical cities
like Austin, Chicago, and Santa Fe. But the group always makes sure to come
home to their roots, even performing at the 2011 Memphis Music and Heritage
Festival, coordinated by the Center for Southern Folklore. So it is
only fitting that Miss Askew and CSF join forces once more to honor the music
and its heritage in this great city.
