This photograph shows Van Zula Hunt posing with her guitar in 1981. Van Zula Hunt was born in the small west Tennessee town of Somerville and learned to play guitar and sing from her parents. Van Zula Hunt was a Beale Street mainstay from her arrival in Memphis in the 1920s when she began performing with Son Brimmer and his renowned Jug Band. Hunt traveled with variety shows in which she sang blues and popular songs, danced, and performed comedy routines. Over the years she experimented with various musical styles, from classical to reverent gospel to raunchy blues. Van Zula Hunt died at age 93 in 1995.
